Erin's Corner: May 2017
Erin’s Corner: May 2017
Finally, some really nice weather moving into summer! The last weekend in April I attended the Stony Plain Fish and Game Banquet after a busy day of attending the Parkland County Garage Sale day. I managed to visit 6 of the 9 community halls hosting sales in the County. It was great to get out and chat with my constituents.
May 3rd marked the signature event ‘McHappy Days’ to support Ronald McDonald House. It was wonderful to see the support and volunteers from so many of our local groups, and business’s.
On May 5th I was honoured to speak at the opening ceremonies for Soroptimist International Western Canada Region Conference held at the River Cree Marriott Hotel. Soroptimist International improves the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Amongst the delegates our Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Mitchell, gave a compelling speech.
Later that same evening, I volunteered at the Carvel Spring Perogy supper, with over 300 in attendance and of course a truly delicious supper as usual.
May 6th I headed off to the Art Gallery of Alberta where the Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts was opening the first ever provincial Ukrainian art display, Five Waves of Inspiration. What a historic occasion, one of which I am sure will be repeated in the future.
May 7th I enjoyed the afternoon here in Stony at ‘Janes’ Walk’ hosted by the Multicultural Centre. Councilor Judy Bennett spoke of her memories of Stony Plain over the years.
'Janes Walk' also included looking at what the future of Stony Plain could look like as a community.
In the evening with great pride I had the honour of awarding the very prestigious Alberta Century Farm and Ranch award to our very own Trautman family. The award recognizes families in Alberta who have continuously owned and operated the same land for 100 years or more. The Trautman’s have been farming in our region for 111 years now.
May 9th I began my week at the legislature with the student that had been chosen as MLA for a day. Keenan Lewis had 3 days to explore politics in real time. The students had a variety of tasks to perform, including a debate.
On May 17th it was my please to present grant funding cheques to two outstanding groups here in Stony Plain. Alberta Parenting for the Future and MOM’s Canada. Both organizations do wonderful work in the region in assisting our constituents.
Coming up for June: On the 3rd of course is Farmer’s Day, and I look forward to being in the parade, and attending many wonderful events here in Stony and the county. My office will not be open on Saturday June 10th, however please feel free to drop by Monday to Friday.
